I added this section because I thought "hey, one of the most intriguing things about Dante is his half-demon heritage". Growing up as half of something is always hard, especially when you don't have a father, or a family member that can guide you into understanding your other half. Understanding the human world is the easy part, as Dante grew up in the human world with his mother before she died. However, there is the constant need for blood, and the need to kill, which is part of his demon self. |
| So there's the need to be a demon, the instincts that drive him—and then there's his human morality, and the stories of his father that he's heard. So, he's not quite sure how to be. Whether he should care about humans or save them, and as crass as Dante can be, he's still confused. However, we don't see his confusion externally until Vergil arrives in Devil May Cry 3. |
| Vergil, who believed his human mother never loved him as much as Dante, swears to find his father's power by taking a trip down to Hell. This takes Dante for surprise (Dante, who believes that his twin brother is dead, and then is suddenly presented with his brother not only still being alive, but his brother not even bothering to try and find him again after their mother died), and forces him to finally deal with his demonic heritage. As opposed to Dante, who's content living in the human world, Vergil's lust for power drives him to Hell. It's not just power, but also the need to fulfill the knowledge of what his other half of him is. It's said that Sparda locked Hell, and then lived in the mortal world, and then died as a mortal man. Sparda was still a demon, and bore half-breed young. So while they're still demons, have instincts as demons do, they have human morals (especially being raised by a human mother). |
| Dante seems to resolve his confusion after Vergil falls into Hell, and in Devil May Cry he's quite proud of both his human and demon heritage. As opposed to feeling anger toward his father, he has a lot of pride in the sacrifice that he made. |
