The items listed here, particularly, are the items that are seen constantly throughout the Devil May Cry games—they reflect specifically on Dante, or on the plot of the game itself. I only chose a few incredibly important ones. |
Rebellion is the sword that Dante carries both as a default sword in Devil May Cry 2, and as his first weapon in Devil May Cry 3. From the few screencaps floating around of Devil May Cry 4, it looks as if Dante's carrying the extended version of Rebellion there as well. From what I can tell, their basic design is the same. After Mission 7 when Dante can Devil Trigger, the sword fans out, the two handles extending from either side of the hilt. It is uncertain as to where Dante got Rebellion, and only that he begins two of the games with the sword equipped. |
| It's obvious where the name "Rebellion" comes from—showing resistance against an authority. This could refer to Dante's personality in general and his constant need for rebellion, itself; or his constant rebellion against his blood, and his brother. |
If it's one thing that's constant throughout the Devil May Cry games, it's Dante's twin hand guns, Ebony and Ivory. They're two of the animated guns in the game, and you can always perform cool tricks with them (like keep enemies suspended in mid-air, always amazingly amusing, and it always boosts your style rank!) They're both handmade, custom guns. I've come to the conclusion that they're semi-automatics, though I'm still unsure of the caliber. It's possible that they're either .45s or .44s. Of course any recoil of the guns would hardly phase Dante, as he shoots a shot gun with one hand. Ebony and Ivory were made by Dante when he goes going by the alias "Tony Redgrave" (in the novel) in a small weapon's shop that he took occupancy in at the time. They each have a picture of a victorian woman set into the handle. There are larger pictures of the guns in the artbook gallery. |
| After the battle, Vergil falls into Hell, leaving the Force Edge behind. Dante takes it back to the human world with him, and it becomes his default sword in Devil May Cry one; where he uses the other half of the amulet from the defeated Nero Angelo to turn it into the Sparda and unleash its true power. |
Given to him by his mother, Dante's amulet is one trinket that he keeps with himself at all times. It hangs around his neck, and seems to make an appearance when it deems significant. For example: he comes out of the bathroom ruffling his hair, shirtless, bearing nothing except the amulet around his neck. Putting the audience's immediate attention upon the large red object on his chest. In the original Devil May Cry, it falls from his coat when Nero Angelo grabs him by the throat. Nero Angelo then goes crazy and sort of flies away. |
| In reality, there are two parts to the actual amulet. One half was given to Dante, and the other to his twin, Vergil. The amulet was said to be a "gift to humans", used by Sparda to lock the power of Hell. It was assumedly given to Eva as a gift afterward. Whole, it not only unlocks Hell, but also unlocks the full potential of the Force Edge, creating the Sparda. |
| In Mesopotamian myth, newborn boys are often preyed upon by Lilith. There is a Hebrew tradition to place an amulet around the neck of a newborn boy, inscribed with the three angels, to protect them from the demoness and the lilin (Lilith's children). |
The Sparda is the final form of the Force Edge combined with the power of the twin amulets [that locked away the demon word]. The Sparda bears the same name as Sparda himself, and goes back to the same roots. "Spada" in Italian means "sword", and the extra "r" was added to make it more easily pronounceable. The Sparda is Sparda's sword, that extends into a huge scythe. It was the sword that Sparda used to defeat Mundus the first time. Its true power is only unlocked when Dante Devil Triggers. The sword itself is very organic looking, with a huge scarlet jewel or eye in the center of it. It's the most powerful sword in the game. Trish carries it at the end of Devil May Cry, and still does when she is unlocked in Devil May Cry 2. |
